How we test and score
We test accessories against real writing tasks, measure what can be measured, and say plainly when the cheaper option is the right one.
Who reviews these picks
Claire Ashford, Stationery Reviewer and Ink Collector
Claire has filled hundreds of converters and tested ink on every major fountain-pen paper. She writes NibPath's reviews with an eye for the measurable: dry time, shading range, feathering on standard 80gsm, and whether the case actually holds a capped Sailor 1911.
What we score on
Every pick is judged on the same criteria. We weight them by what actually matters for the way you will use the gear, then write up the tradeoffs honestly.
Ink performance
Shading, shimmer, water-resistance, dry time, and feathering on Rhodia Dot and standard office paper.
Paper compatibility
Bleed-through, show-through, and ghosting rated on Tomoe River, Clairefontaine, and 80gsm copier.
Build and materials
Case stitching, nib plating durability, converter fit and seal quality over 30-day test periods.
Fit and fitment
Converter and nib compatibility by pen model -- the same data a fitment guide needs.
Value
Whether the premium over a budget pick is justified by measurable difference, not brand prestige.
How our picks work
Each category roundup is ranked by our editorial score. The highest-scored option carries the Top Pick badge. Separately, the option that delivers the most for the money carries the Best Value badge. They are often different products on purpose: the best-scored is not always the smartest buy for most people, and we tell you which is which.
What we never do
- We take no payment, free product, or sponsorship in exchange for coverage or a ranking. There are no paid placements.
- We say what is wrong with a product, not just what is right. Every pick lists real tradeoffs.
- We match recommendations to your situation (fitment, skill level, budget, and use case) instead of pushing one product on everyone.
- We keep our picks current and re-check them as products and prices change.
How we make money
NibPath is funded by affiliate commissions. When you buy through a link on our site, the retailer may pay us a small commission at no additional cost to you. That funding never influences our scores or our picks. Full details are on our affiliate disclosure.
